Coaching for grad students, postdocs, faculty, & career movers

You are not starting over.

I coach graduate students, postdocs, and people moving into or out of higher education. You already did the work. This is about saying what it is worth, in words other people can use.

What I help with

Two directions, one skill set.

Track 01 Ā· PhD students, postdocs, early career faculty

Getting into and Through Academia

  • Building a strong CV
  • Networking
  • Writing a teaching statement
  • How the academic job search works
  • What the first year of teaching looks like
  • Balancing teaching, research, and service
  • What a good mentorship relationship looks like early on
  • Making strategic choices about professional organizations and service.

Track 02 Ā· Career Transitions

Skill Mobility and Repositioning

  • Turning a CV into a resume
  • Showing what your experience is worth to people outside academia
  • Rewriting academic language for the industry you are moving into
  • Networking outside academia

How coaching works

You set the agenda. I ask the questions. Together we achieve your goals.

You decide what we work on. I listen, ask, and stay out of the way. You are the expert on your own life. Most people are surprised by how much they already knew.

01

What a first session is like

You pick what to focus on and what you want to walk away with. If you do not know yet, that is the first ten minutes, and it counts. You will not get a diagnosis or a lecture. You will get real questions, quiet long enough to hear yourself, and a next step you chose.

02

Coaching, therapy, or mentoring

Therapy is for pain that lives in the past. Mentoring is advice from someone who walked your exact road. You are the subject matter expert of your own life. Coaching is a relationship where I walk beside you as a thought partner in service of your career explorations. If you need one of the other two, I will say so.

03

Every session ends with a commitment to continue the work.

You leave with one achievable thing you chose to do, and a date on it.Ā Manageable enough that you will actually do it before we talk again.

About

I have made this move myself.

I taught K-12 math. I designed graduate education for the military. I have worked outside the academy and come back. More than fifteen years of this, including faculty development across two campuses at a large research university.

So when you say the job search is strange, or that you cannot tell what your work is worth outside your field, I am not guessing. I have sat where you are sitting.

  • Gallup CliftonStrengths coach
  • Co-Active trained
  • ICF ACC in progress
  • More than fifteen years

FAQ

Before you ask.

What does this cost?

Rates are shared on the call. The first thirty minutes are free, and you will know the price before you decide anything.

How is this different from what my campus already offers?

Campus programs are built for everyone. This is built for your case: your strengths, your field, your statements. I also work outside your reporting line, so nothing you say here goes into a review.

I am not sure what I need. Is the call still worth it?

That is the most common reason people book. Bring the thing you keep putting off, and we will work on it for half an hour.

Ready when you are

Your agenda, real coaching, no pitch. If we are not a fit, I will tell you who might be.
